  We are going to be surprising Mrs. McAfee with a video on Thursday to kick off Principal’s month. I am going to need your participation to make this happen.  I will be going around to classrooms tomorrow asking you to tell me your favorite memory or thought about Mrs. McAfee.  Take some time today to discuss it with your class and pick your top 2 things to be shared with me when I stop by on Wednesday!

  We recently discovered that we have a staff member at CMS with American Indian Heritage, our Athletic Trainer, Mrs. Miller! Mrs. Miller was kind enough to answer some questions we have about what is was like growing up with American Indian Heritage.   Could you share some information about your family with us? I am half Navajo, which is the biggest Native American Tribe in the United States.  My mom is full blooded Navajo.  She grew up on the Navajo Reservation in northwest New Mexico.  The Navajo Reservation spans over New Mexico, Arizona and Utah.  Most of my grandmas, aunts, uncles, and cousins on my mom’s side of the family still reside on the Navajo Reservation.  One of my aunts lives in a Hogan which is a traditional Navajo home.  It has 8 sides and the door always faces east to see the sun rise.   2. What experiences do you have that could be different from out students?  I grew up in Albuquerque which is about 2 and a half hours away from Gallup, NM.  Gallup is in the middle

There are many steps at  both the state and federal level to get a law passed. In order to get American Indian Heritage Day from an idea to a law there had to follow many steps. Here are the steps that they had to take.  Filed 11/13/2011 Out of House Committee 3/4/2012 Voted on by House 4/3/2012 Out of Senate Committee 4/23/2012 Voted on by Senate  4/25/2012 Governor Action 5/10/2012 Bill becomes a Law!!! Which of these steps do you feel are the most important and why do you feel that way?

  Saturday September 26th is American Indian Heritage Day in Texas.  This day of celebration and honor has only existed for 8 years.  It took a group of people to stand up and take notice that as a state Texas needed to recognize the people who first inhabited our great state.  Tomorrow you find out the process of turning this idea into the wonderful day that it is today!  Why do you feel like this day needs to exist? Why do you feel people decided to stand up for American Indians in Texas?

  First Responders give so much in their duties. They put themselves and their lives above everyone else. Today we will talk about a positive experience you have had with a First Responder. I have an example to help you get started.  A few years ago I witnessed a bad car accident. I called it in and waited for help to arrive. I had my daughter with me (who was 3 at the time). While the EMT workers were taking people to be taken care of the Police Officers surrounded Amelia so she didn’t have to see anything that would scare her. I was so happy that they took a few seconds to help my child feel safe. Remember that we are making gift baskets for our First Responders.   Next week we will be preparing for First Responders Day. I wanted to give all the classes a heads up so you could start preparing. Each lunch will collect treats for our community First Responders. When you are out this weekend go ahead and grab some things to start building our “Thank you baskets”.   Now that you know what you want to do and where you need to go to do it, it is time to look into what you need to do to make it happen.  If you need to go to college or trade school what are some scholarships that you could apply for?  If you are going straight into a career what do you need to do to get settled? What are some part time jobs that you could do during your training to help prepare you?

I hope that you came up with some great ideas!  Today you will have the opportunity to research where you need to go to achieve that dream.  Where is the best school (college or trade)? Where is the best training program?  These are just a few of these things that you can research .

  That video yesterday was powerful in many different ways. I saw a group of kids coming together in complete unison to make something happen. I also saw individuals showcasing their individuality while still being part of a group.  How does this video relate to you?  How did those students step up for their school (not just because they did a step show)  How can YOU #StepUpatCMS Teachers have the student write down what they want to do this year to step up and Tweet it out with our hashtag!

  I hope you are all showing your Pirate Pride! I hope that the choices you are making show how we #StepUpat CMS. In the next slide you will watch a video.
